Oscars: The After Party (Vanity Fair Style, Yo)

‘Wait, you’re not doing a full blown Oscar dress post? With designer commentary, tiaras and sparkles?!’

Well, no. Because everything was so DULL this year!

There was just no ‘OH MY GOD, HER LEG LOOKS LIKE IT’S POSSESSED!’ moment. Everyone looked fairly safe (though kudos on the animal accessories, Quvenzhané Wallis. I now want a bag shaped like a dog.)

Everyone knows the after party is where it’s at. After the 10 hour show, everyone’s like ‘Uh, get me out of this couture shit, I have’t been able to eat all day in case I spill something on it. GET IT OFF ME!’

And POOF, some magic clothes fairy comes and brings them a rocking frock that they can get their groove on in.

So these are my favourites. We will probably have to agree to disagree on some of them.

1. Jessica Day (aka Zooey Deschanel) rocking some old lady chic. But in the best way possible.

2. Lily Collins. Top half- flowers, pretty, kind of naked? Bottom half- Retro mermaid.

3. This doesn’t even need justifying. Jennifer Lawrence looks good in Calvin Klein.

4. Mrs. Bloom. Going all Gatsby on us. Love it.

Nail Art: My Nails Are All Dressed Up!

I’ve wanted to do these ever since I saw Zooey Deschanel’s nails at the Golden Globes a few months ago. I’m not completely happy with them, but for a first attempt they’re not bad!!

I’m going to the hairdressers this afternoon for the first time in nearly a year- I hate hairdressers, they never seem to get my hair exactly how I want it! If it does turn out okay, I’ll post a picture. If not, I will be wearing a bag over my head until it grows out.

Zooey Deschanel- New Girl Review

It might not be a new thing in the US, but New Girl has only just graced our screens here in the UK- and I wanted to show my appreciation of what could turn into my new favourite US show since How I Met Your Mother. I’ve tried to limit myself to how many television shows I follow, or else I will end spending all my time trying to watch everything. At the moment, I watch Downton Abbey, The Walking Dead, Pan Am, QI and HIMYM. If I add New Girl to the list, then that will have to be the last thing. Unless something really good comes out, obviously.

Reasons New Girl Is Amazing

  1. The Guys: Looking forward to the next episodes, I’ve noticed Coach has been replaced. Since his only really funny moment in Ep 1 is his improvising of ‘I’ve Had The Time Of My Life’ with bears, it’s safe to say I’m not that sad to see him go. Though his replacement better be good. Schmidt is like my new Barney Stinson- a complete tool, but a loveable tool. Nick is pretty blah, but he is obviously going to be the love interest of Jess further down the line, so that’s forgivable. And he does an amazingly shit British accent when drunk.
  2. The Girl: I know most people will say this, but Jess is pretty much me. I might not be a teacher. I might not sing to myself. But some of the things she says are things that I have definitely said in the past. ‘Pink wine makes me slutty’ and her references to Lord of the Rings are just two of her more brilliant sayings. The ability to relate to her to easily is probably why this show sets itself up to be a hit.
  3. The Douchebag Jar: All douchebags should have a jar. It should be a new law.
  4. Dirty Dancing: Name me a girl who hasn’t watched this film whilst depressed and I will find you a flying pig.
  5. She creates her own theme song: Whilst pretending to be a stripper with a heart of gold. And I’ve noticed on the next episode opening, they use her made up song! Genius!

Why I Love She and Him

The new She and Him Christmas album is a revelation. A Very She and Him Christmas isn’t another Bieber/ Buble type album, that ultimately feels rushed and made just for commercial kicks. Instead, it is one of their best albums, one that will be brought out again and again every holiday season-by me at least.

They’re relatively unknown in the UK, which is a shame. People over here are more likely to know Zooey Deschanel as the actress in 500 Days of Summer and Elf. It was in Elf that I first noticed Deschanel- not least because she almost outshone Will Ferrell in her scenes. She had the prettiest voice I had heard in a long time. After a repeat on the television last year, I Googled her music on a whim to see if she had released anything. Low and behold I found the She and Him album Volume II. When you first listen to it, you might think you’ve been transported back to the 1950s, where pop songs were wonderfully simple. No backing track on loop, no synthetic voices, no gimmicks. Just good old fashioned music. My personal favourite track from the new Christmas album is ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside,’ not just a straight forward cover, but a re imagining with a country twist. An album of covers, what A Very She and Him Christmas doesn’t do is showcase Deschanel’s beautiful song writing; she co-wrote the Volumes albums with bandmate Matt Ward.

Unlike many critics, I like Volume II more than Volume I, the first album released in 2008. Maybe that’s because it was the first of their albums that I listened to. It isn’t a heart breaking confessional, or even a though provoking commentary, but it’s easy listening that makes you happy- what more can you ask for?

With all the hype surrounding the new John Lewis Christmas advert, I thought it was a shame that all covers of The Smiths ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’ were tarnished with the same brush as the choice used by the JL advertising team. From the 500 Days of Summer soundtrack, the She and Him version is hauntingly beautiful- and it feels like Deschanel is a Smiths fan as she sings it. It isn’t a sell out because she believes in the words she is singing. It is my favourite of all their songs, and is constantly on repeat on my iTunes.

So I implore anybody and everybody reading this to head over to iTunes and take a look at She and Him. You won’t be disappointed- and if you are, tell me here and I will try my hardest to convince you otherwise!
